mimi's humble abode
06.30.06 (1:00 pm)   [edit]

mimi's humble abode was broken in to.  someone kicked in the back door.  luckily, the puppies are all ok and accounted for.  no major destruction nor too much missing, but the front of my modem was crushed in and the hard drive is gone...so i am out of commission but for the occasional post i can squeeze in from work.

Slashing suspect tells cops: 'I'm in big trouble' Gary Taylor Sentinel Staff Writer June 22, 2006 In Franklyn E. Duzant's own words, Friday was "a special day." After all, it was his son Nico's 11th birthday. There was lunch out, shopping and a father-son trip to the local library. A family dinner was planned, complete with a birthday cake waiting in the refrigerator. The hours before Nico and his mother, Evangeline "Gigi" Duzant, were savagely slain seemed perfectly normal, according to new details released Wednesday. But as Duzant, accused of killing them, appeared in court for the first time, the big question on everyone's mind remained: why? "We can't answer that," Seminole County Sheriff Don Eslinger said. Duzant, a 5-inch cut visible across his neck, showed no emotion as he appeared before Seminole County Judge Donald Marblestone. The judge asked him whether he understood his rights. Duzant said yes. Marblestone ordered Duzant held without bail and scheduled an arraignment for Aug. 8. Because Duzant receives $3,000 a month in disability income from the military, he doesn't qualify for a public defender. However, Marblestone said he would appoint one "provisionally" to give the Public Defender's Office time to find him a lawyer. Investigators continue to dig into the past of Duzant, described by authorities as suffering from depression. They have subpoenaed his medical records from Veterans Affairs and from doctors who examined Duzant in 2003 after his wife said he threatened suicide. They also are awaiting toxicology results to see whether Duzant had any drugs in his system at the time of the attacks. Before Duzant was moved to jail Tuesday, investigators talked to him three times in his hospital room at Orlando Regional Medical Center, where he had been taken for injuries that caused him to collapse as deputies handcuffed him at the front door of his home Friday. The first meeting was Sunday evening, soon after tubes were removed from Duzant's throat, Eslinger said. Duzant's mood was "detached, flat, non-emotional," according to investigators. He told them "everything spiraled out of control" but he said he did not recall the killings, Eslinger said. When investigators returned Monday morning, Duzant acknowledged responsibility for the killings, Eslinger said. "He said, 'I struck them once. Once is all I can remember,' " Eslinger said. That may have been the case with Duzant's wife, Eslinger said, but according to eyewitnesses, it certainly wasn't what happened in the attack on Nico. When Duzant was asked why he struck them, he offered no explanation but denied that any arguments had occurred that day. Investigators say Duzant decapitated his wife in the master bedroom of their home on Queensbridge Drive near Lake Mary and then turned on Nico with a samurai sword. As neighbors watched in horror, the injured boy ran from the home, crying for help, his father chasing him. Duzant caught up with his son across the street and slashed him time after time with the sword, they said. "This is all a blur, a bad, bad, bad, bad blur, a dream," Duzant told investigators in the second meeting. He said it had been "a special day" and then "everything got messed up," Eslinger said. "I'm in big trouble" were the first words out of Duzant's mouth when investigators returned to his hospital room Monday evening. "At that point, he evoked his right to remain silent," Eslinger said. "He said, 'I don't want to say anything more to further incriminate myself.' " The sword investigators think was used to kill Nico, the one witnesses said had a yellow tassel hanging from its handle, was found in an upstairs bedroom. It is 36 inches long overall, with a blade 27 inches long and about an inch wide. They still haven't determined whether the same sword was used to behead Evangeline Duzant, Eslinger said. Blood found throughout the house is being tested to determine which of the three family members it came from, which may help investigators learn what happened, Eslinger said. Investigators are trying to re-create Duzant's day Friday, "right up to 5:29 p.m.," the time the attacks happened, Eslinger said. They know he and Nico went to a nearby library branch between 2 and 3 p.m., and they think the two ate lunch at an area restaurant and visited a store, though they're still trying to confirm that, Eslinger said. And there was the special dinner planned to celebrate Nico's birthday, Duzant told a neighbor barely 20 minutes before the attack. Eslinger also described Duzant's injuries for the first time. In addition to the cut on the side of his neck and a small injury on the back of his neck, Duzant had a cut near his right eye and a stab wound to his abdomen. The Sheriff's Office is awaiting more information before saying whether the wounds were self-inflicted, but Eslinger said Duzant, when asked about the neck wound, said: "I didn't go deep enough." Medical professionals told deputies the wound to the abdomen also appeared to be self-inflicted. While waiting for the court session to start Wednesday, Duzant sat quietly, looking straight ahead. The jail's director, Maj. Michael Tidwell, stood beside him. Duzant was the only prisoner in the courtroom. Larry Kowal, a public defender, approached Duzant and said that he was the only person to whom Duzant should talk. "I don't care who comes out to talk to you -- don't talk to anyone," Kowal said. He also asked Duzant whether he had talked to anyone about the case, but Duzant's answer could not be understood over the speakers. Meanwhile, sheriff's crime-scene technicians continue to work inside the house, where the birthday cake still sits in the refrigerator waiting for the party that never happened. They have spent about 200 man-hours in the house and will be there the rest of the week, Eslinger said. Mary Knowles of the Sentinel staff contributed to this report.
