Heart of Gold - Neil Young
the sweetest voice calls my name
03.03.07 (9:37 am)   [edit]

Wednesday evening, I was working at the "home improvement" store.   I was stationed near the exit doors, but my back is usually to the door.  I was working, taking care of customers, when I heard the sweetest voice in the world speak my name...I turned around to see from where this melody came, and there stood my beautiful daughter.  This event is especially wonderful because she gets tired out from all of her different therapies and is usually ready for bed by 8 and it was well after 8 p.m. and this was the first time she had come into the store when I was working!  We stood and talked awhile, while darling hubby went and got the items he needed.  It was wonderful to be able to introduce her to some of my co-worker's.

The next customer that was in my line happened to be a nurse.  I gave her a brief synopsis of her situation.  She understood completely and asked me if I knew how lucky we were just to still have her....of course, I told her we did know and she was amazed at April's progress, considering all she had suffered.  It was reassuring to get a nurse's take on April's situation.

I had made some homemade soup (I know, don't fall over in shock!!!) and I wanted to take some to April and Dave on Tuesday, but Dave had caught a cold and wasn't feeling well, so I delayed it till Thursday.  When I arrived on Thursday evening with soup in hand, I found April busy cleaning up in the office.  The first thing she said to me was "Coughing", "Tired"!  Oh no, baby girl has finally caught a bug...She has done well all this time, not catching everything that everyone else has had.

I gave her a hand and moved some things off the floor and vaccumed the office and her bedroom.  She had some ribs in the oven and so we put together some goodies and had dinner and then cleaned up.  I knew she was tired and not feeling great, so I took off soon after.

The amazing news for this little blurb is that when we were in the office, she was sorting paperwork...now mind you, she is struggling to "read" a child's book, but she can sort and file the stuff in her office just like always...which tells me that she can read and comprehend, it's just some sort of "short circuit" between her brain and her verbal skills, getting the words out of her mouth.  I asked her where a certain paper went, and tried to figure it out.  The invoice had a customer name but not a job number.  The files are set up by job number.  She looked at the invoice, dug into the file and sorted them until she found the right one...and it was the right one!

But, she sometimes cannot remember our names!  When she spoke my name at the "home improvement" store, I heard her hubby tell it to her first...

and at dinner, she was trying to tell Dave something, and could not remember his name...

weird, the way this works!

But, I have every faith that she will overcome so much of this and continue to have a full and happy life....it is just going to take a lot of time and healing and determination and faith.

Also, the woman I told you about before, Valerie, the one who wrote "The Fire Within" and we all went to meet will be speaking on Tuesday and I am hoping to get us together to go hear her!  She is such an inspiration to us all.

xoxoxo

She is very much an inspiration to us too, Mimi. And your continued love and support speaks volumes. I can't even imagine how difficult the little, insignificant things are for her, yet she keeps right on going. You've raised a very strong willed daughter there, you should be proud :)

p.s. I KNOW you are!

What a nice surprise for you. The brain is fascinating isn't it...how it can work in one area and not in another. She has made amazing progress and you are very blessed...as is she.

Goodness. I fall off the face of the tEarth for a week, and look at all I missed! How wonderful, Mimi. I love hearing about April's progress. How exciting to see her show up at the store like that. It must be hard to know that she can't remember names, but it sounds like you realize it's just a short circuit, as opposed to her truly forgetting. By the way, next time you see Dave, let him know that one of your tblog friends thinks he's wonderful. :)
